MINNEAPOLIS -- Jason Vargas threw seven scoreless innings, Raul Ibanez homered in his second game for Kansas City and the Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-0 Wednesday. Russell Westbrook Jersey . Vargas (8-3) allowed four singles and two walks while striking out five, allowing only two runners from a diluted Twins lineup to reach second base. Mike Moustakas and Jarrod Dyson hit RBI singles in the second inning against Kevin Correia (4-10), and that was all Vargas needed. With Joe Mauer missing, placed on the disabled list before the game because of a strained muscle on his right side, the Twins didnt cause Vargas any trouble. They were shut out for the sixth time this season and lost for the seventh time in their last nine games. The 42-year-old Ibanez signed Monday with the Royals, the team that first gave him a regular spot in the lineup all the way back in 2001. He had two hits and two runs in this game, including the solo shot to right field in the eighth. Ibanez was released by the Los Angeles Angels last month. Eric Hosmer, who walked three times, added an RBI single in the ninth inning for insurance. With rookie Yordano Ventura and now Danny Duffy joining the veteran trio of Vargas, James Shields and Jeremy Guthrie, who are all in the top 10 in the league in innings pitched, the Royals have a deep rotation that can keep them in the post-season chase all summer. Vargas improved to 4-1 in his last eight starts, seven of which have counted as quality: six innings or more and three runs or less. Vargas also became the first Royals left-hander to win eight games or more before the All-Star break since Chris George in 2003. Correia lowered his ERA to 4.95, the only time hes had that mark under 5.00 since his first start of the year, after surrendering six hits and two walks in six innings while striking out three. The right-hander completed exactly six innings for the fifth consecutive turn, and he has allowed two runs or fewer in four of those starts. But the second inning was the one that hurt, when five batters reached. He struck out Billy Butler to finish the frame with the bases loaded. NOTES: The Royals swapped RH relievers Wednesday, calling up Casey Coleman from Triple-A Omaha and sending down rookie Michael Mariot, who gave up five runs Tuesday in his second appearance in as many days. ... Chris Parmelee played 1B and batted third for Mauer. He had two hits and stretched his hitting streak to a career-long 12 straight games. ... One of the runners to reach second base for the Twins was Sam Fuld, who was originally ruled out on a steal attempt to end the fifth inning. Manager Ron Gardenhire challenged the call, which was overturned. Gardenhire is 9 for 19 on challenges this season. ... With a rest day for Royals CF Lorenzo Cain, SS Alcides Escobar batted leadoff for the first time this season. Kyle Singler Jersey . The 33-year-old defender has spent his entire career at Chelsea, scoring 57 goals in 621 appearances. He regained his regular starting place under Jose Mourinho in the season that ended at the weekend without Chelsea winning a trophy. Raymond Felton Jersey . For Sweed, a second round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, this will be his second go around in the CFL after previously having spent time with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. .com) - The Grand Slam season will get underway Monday at the Australian Open in Melbourne, where a new champion will be crowned this year.REGINA -- David Lee sacked Darian Durant to prevent a game-tying two-point convert with 14 seconds on the clock and John Chiles caught for a game-high 104 yards as the Toronto Argonauts beat the reeling Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-29 Saturday. The Argos also intercepted Durant three times to send Saskatchewan (8-3) to its second straight loss while Toronto (7-4) won its second in a row. The game was a back-and-forth affair with Saskatchewan scoring 20 straight points to erase an 11-0 deficit and the Argonauts adding 19 straight of their own in the fourth quarter. Chiles caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Toronto QB Zach Collaros as well as the two-point convert to tie the game at 23 after Swayze Waters broke the Argos scoring drought with a 33-yard field goal to open the fourth. Toronto got the ball back immediately when Alonzo Lawrence caught Durants third interception of the game and Jerious Norwood capitalized on a two-yard touchdown run that put the Argonauts ahead for good. Saskatchewan got the ball back with 53 seconds left and Durant hit Chris Getzlaf with a 45-yard pass to set up an 18-yard TD throw to Getzlaf, making it 31-29. But Durants protection broke down on the two-point attempt to give the Argos the win. Durant finished 25 of 50 for 381 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Collaros went 18 for 29 for 225 yards with one touchdown and one pick. After a week in which Saskatchewan lost to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, lost middle linebacker Rey Williams to a season-ending knee injury and had three players charged with aggravated assault, the Roughriders opened Saturday very much like a team on the ropes. Durant threw an interception to Demetrice Morley on his first pass of the game, leading to a one-yard touchdown run by Collaros, makingg his third straight start in place of the injured Ricky Ray. Terrance Ferguson Jersey. Later in the quarter the Argos fumbled on a punt return, giving Saskatchewan the ball at Torontos 22-yard line. But a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty to Dominic Picard forced the Riders into second-and-long, and Cory Huclacks snap on the ensuing punt went over punter Ricky Schmitts head. That gave the Argonauts the ball at Saskatchewans 34-yard line and set up a 48-yard field goal from Waters, who also opened the scoring on a punt single. Still in the first Kory Sheets, the leagues leading rusher, left the game with a right-knee injury after getting rocked by Torontos Jonathan Williams. Chris Milo got the Riders on the board before the end of the quarter with a 33-yard field goal, tying Dave Ridgways club record with his 28th straight. But Saskatchewans woes continued in the second quarter when they couldnt capitalize after Weldon Brown intercepted Collaros near midfield. Milos 21-yard attempt hit the upright in the south end zone, preserving Torontos 11-3 lead. The Roughriders turnaround came after defensive end Ricky Foleys fourth sack of the season and the teams third of the game. Durant hit Chris Getzlaf with a 31-yard touchdown pass and the Riders got the ball right back when Prince Miller recovered a Jason Barnes fumble deep in Toronto territory. Milo made amends for his earlier gaffe with a 19-yard field goal to give Saskatchewan its first lead of the game, 13-10. The Argonauts fumbled on their next possession as well when Riders safety Tyron Brackenridge hit Chad Kackert near midfield. Durant extended the lead a few plays later with a 47-yard TD strike to Rob Bagg. Milo added a nine-yard field goal to give the Riders a 23-12 lead going into the fourth quarter.
